Website Design & Development
The Challenge
The customer needed a platform to share design inspiration, case studies and tips and tricks about design and development. The design needed to accommodate a small amount of content at launch as well as plan for content population for years to come. The customer required profile-based functionality to store information on user bookmarks, categories followed and notifications on new posts based on categories followed. IWC is a tech-heavy office and wanted the site to look smart and cutting-edge.
Menu Design 1 – Abbreviated
Menu Design 2 – Robust
The Strategy
I started with research to gather inspiration from other blog-based sites. From there I created two designs for the menu— A simple dropdown with 6 categories to be used at launch and full screen menu with search incorporated to accommodate a robust menu with hierarchy and many categories. I leveraged my javascript knowledge to complete the customizations to the design and did in-depth research on plugins, working with our back-end developer to meet the functionality requirements. For the design I leaned into the use of images to create visual interest against the simplified but bold color pallet and derived the accent colored from the gradient in IWC’s branding. I utilized an animation in the hero section to drive home the cutting-edge, tech vibe.
The Final Experience
The final site delivered a custom design with unique functionality driven by personalization. Personally, I put in a lot of time on the research phase exploring plugins and strategizing the best way to structure a blogging website. I utilized Dribbble and Behance to browse ideas. I learned a lot about implementing novel functionality and connecting the functionality to the design.
